Arne Slot says he 'gets' Liverpool fans' current frustrations but is determined to channel that anger in a positive direction.
Reds boss Slot was asked about fans booing his side at the end of Sunday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at his press conference prior to Wednesday's Champions League last-16 tie against Galatasaray, and responded by claiming that the jeering suggested he must have made mistakes.
“So first of all you’re frustrated yourself and disappointed we haven’t won," said Slot on Tuesday.
"Second of all, people told me when I first came here that if it [the booing] was towards me … this club is different than other clubs and the fans will support the manager for such a long time.
“So if it’s true what you’re saying (that the booing was directed at him) – and I don’t feel this at all – then I must have done a lot of things wrong and that’s never a nice feeling to have."
Writing in his programme notes ahead of Wednesday's clash with the Turkish champions, which the Reds enter 1-0 down from the first leg, Slot again addressed the booing.
"A lot has been said about the reaction of our fans to our draw against Tottenham and all I can say is I get it," he said.
"I get it from the point of view of disappointment at points being dropped, I get it in terms of frustration at conceding another late goal and I get it about elements of our performance in general.
"I would even go as far to say that it would not be normal if there was not frustration in a situation like this, particularly from those who care about our team and the club in general as much as our fans do.
"Our job now is to use that frustration in a positive way and for this reason it is clearly a good thing that not only do we have another home game so soon after but also that it is a home game of such crucial importance.
"This has to focus minds and heighten our desire to perform and deliver.
"After the support we have received throughout a season that has become more challenging than any of us could have expected, we owe it to our fans to produce for them. We also owe it to ourselves."
