Mohamed Salah previously expressed his desire to stay with Liverpool for the rest of his career. The 33-year-old announced on Tuesday that he will leave the Reds at the end of the season.
Salah signed a two-year deal in April 2025 but will depart Anfield a year earlier than expected after reaching an agreement with the club. The forward joined from Roma in 2017 and has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s success since then.
The Egypt international has won two Premier League titles and the Champions League with the Reds, alongside several other major honours. However, Salah will not fulfil his earlier ambition of retiring as a Liverpool player after sharing his intention to move on in the summer.
"If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can't say much about that - it's not in my hands,” he told Sky Sports in 2021. “It depends on what the club want, not on me.
"At the moment I can't see myself ever playing against Liverpool. That would make me sad. It's hard, I don't want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad. At the moment I don't see myself playing against Liverpool but let's see what will happen in the future."
Those comments were made before the Reds icon signed a new deal in July 2022. Salah has scored 255 goals in 435 games for the club to date, winning four Premier League Golden Boots.
Before arriving at Liverpool, Salah’s previous stint in English football had seen him struggle to break into Chelsea’s first team early in his career. However, he far surpassed expectations with the Reds and sits third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list.
In a video posted to social media on Tuesday, Salah said: "Hello everyone. Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people, would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit. I can't explain in words to anyone not part of this club.”
He added: "Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone."
Salah will hope to guide the Reds to another trophy before his departure. Arne Slot’s side have reached the FA Cup and Champions League quarter-finals.
Following the player’s video, a Liverpool club statement said: "Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool FC at the end of the 2025-26 season. The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.
"Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them.”
