Negotiations between Liverpool and Real Madrid may reopen following reports Eduardo Camavinga could become available this summer. Los Blancos, who bought Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer, are allegedly disappointed with the Frenchman's progress and would consider cashing in.
Real's loss could prove to be Arne Slot's gain, however, considering Liverpool have kept tabs on the player for some years now. And Alvaro Arbeloa's latest comments could speak volumes after lumping blame on the midfielder following their latest loss.
Critics pointed to Camavinga for failing to properly track his runner in the build-up to Mallorca's opening goal against Real on Saturday. And Real chief Arbeloa didn't hesitate to assign responsibility immediately after the result, which may have ended their chances of winning La Liga.
"On a play where we had the numerical advantage, a lapse in concentration cost us a goal," said the former Liverpool defender, per L'Equipe. "You lose your marker, you don't track him, and you pay the price."
Camavinga's contract at the Bernabeu isn't due to expire until the summer of 2029. The midfielder, who has also functioned as a left-back in Madrid, has expressed his desire to see out that commitment, though the club may see it differently.
Los Blancos initially signed the player to a six-year contract when he joined from Rennes in a deal potentially worth £35million back in 2021. He penned an extension in 2023, though Camavinga perhaps isn't so invaluable as he once was in Madrid.
The Angola-born star has played the full 90 minutes on only six occasions across all competitions this term. He's also made 15 appearances from the bench, already beating his substitute tally from each of the previous two campaigns.
That being said, there may be a market for a player of his profile at Anfield. There has been talk of Curtis Jones attracting interest from both in and outside the Premier League (though the player doesn't want to leave), while Real are said to be admirers of Alexis Mac Allister.
There's also the fact Wataru Endo's contract is due to expire next year, with the Japan international having recently turned 33. As such, there may be a desire to add new competition for Ryan Gravenberch in the deeper midfield role.
In the event Arbeloa is kept on and calling the shots this summer, his remarks suggest he may be open to letting Camavinga leave. And after long-held links with Liverpool over the years, Anfield may make tick a lot of boxes as a potential destination.
