Steven Gerrard has explained that his granddaughter has made his family "very happy" as he spoke about being a grandad ahead of Saturday's charity match. The 45-year-old's eldest daughter, Lilly, gave birth to a baby girl named Lilla Grey in July.
Gerrard has regularly shared updates in the months since, embracing his new role as a loving grandfather. And speaking ahead of the Liverpool Legends' Charity Match about his content, the Anfield icon said: "At least I've got an excuse now [for being old].
"Delighted. She's a little dream. She's made us all very happy and hopefully we can get a win for her today."
A midfielder in his Premier League wonder years, it comes as Gerrard is set to play upfront during this weekend's charity match against Borussia Dortmund legends - with the encounter set to unfold at Anfield at 3pm.
Kenny Dalglish and Jurgen Klopp will manage the Liverpool legends during the encounter, joined by Ian Rush and John Aldridge.
Playing alongside Gerrard in the starting XI for the game, meanwhile, are Jerzy Dudek, Stephen Wright, Martin Skrtel, Sami Hyypia, Ragnar Klavan, Fabio Aurelio, Jay Spearing, Igor Biscan, Thiago Alcantara and Ryan Babel.
Also involved in the squad are Pepe Reina, Sander Westerveld, Gregory Vignal, Martin Kelly, Mark Gonzalez, Albert Riera, Jermaine Pennant, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Yossi Benayoun, Louise Schillgard and Natasha Dowie.
Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, will field a starting XI of Roman Weidenfeller, Jan Koller, Mohamed Zidan, Paul Lambert, Jakub Błaszczykowski, Dede, Jorg Heinrich, Kevin Großkreutz, Patrick Owomoyela, Lukasz Piszczek and Marcel Schmelzer.
Nobert Dickel, meanwhile, will take the reins of the team. The proceeds of the match will go directly toward the work of the LFC Foundation and Forever Reds.
Elsewhere during the live coverage of the charity match, Klopp explained that it's "great to be back," in Liverpool. The German head coach led the Reds to a Premier League title, four domestic cups and a Champions League between 2015 and 2024, before he was succeeded by Arne Slot.
And speaking about his return to Merseyside, the 58-year-old explained: "When I left here I didn't know how often I would come back. First year I didn't want to jynx it, now I didn't want to create wrong expectations or whatever.
"There's always a reason not to, but this was great. There was no doubt that I had to come to support the foundation, and that's why we are here. And the nice thing is that we play a game at Anfield against my other old club, which is really nice."
He added: "It's just nice, being here, having absolutely no pressure, no intensity, just here to enjoy the atmosphere and I can't wait. More than 60,000 people here this afternoon which is completely ridiculous. And I hope the players can entertain in a different way, a little bit."
