Steven Gerrard has said that it’s a "dream" to manage Liverpool – but also admitted he’s not ready to take the role on a long-term basis yet. The Reds legend has, though, offered to help the club in any way he can.
Gerrard is currently without a job after leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq back in January. He has previously taken charge of Aston Villa and Rangers, after starting his coaching career with Liverpool’s youth sides.
When asked if there was a possibility of him not going back into coaching, he told The Overlap: “I’m okay with that, I enjoy covering some of the games. I enjoy having quite a bit of free time, probably the best part I’ve had from a family point of view in ever really, in terms of being there, being present.
"Lio [Gerrard's youngest son] is eight now. During his career, I’ve been in Scotland, in Birmingham, so yeah, really enjoying the family side of it and having a load of free time, but also I’m conscious that I want to stay busy enough.”
Having spent the majority of his career as a player with Liverpool, Gerrard has outlined his stance on returning to the club in a coaching role. He repeated an offer sent to manager Arne Slot last week.
“I’ve got a brilliant connection with the club, I always have. Probably a stronger connection since I left, they’ve always been unbelievable.
“Any help or area I could help the club in, obviously, I’d try and do it if I could. But I suppose what you want to know is, do I want to manage Liverpool at some point in my life?
“Of course, that would be a dream, but I think, would I be ready for it right now, to take it over a long period of time, probably not. But is there a possibility in the future to be alongside someone, them elite managers that you talk about.”
When asked if he would be an assistant to someone at Liverpool, he said: “It depends who it is, how the conversation goes, and does he need me? What does he think I can offer?”
“I would do it for Liverpool Football Club if I was asked and they felt that I was the right man to do it, I’d be up for it, of course.”
Gerrard returned to Liverpool this weekend, featuring in a Liverpool Legends charity match against Borussia Dortmund at Anfield, where he was managed by Sir Kenny Dalglish and Jurgen Klopp.
The game ended 2-2 with Thiago Alcantara and Jay Spearing scoring for Liverpool.
