Former Liverpool man Trent Alexander-Arnold could be handed a big boost in his Real Madrid career in the summer, with the club reportedly preparing to sell one of his biggest competitors for a starting place.
Alexander-Arnold completed a move from Liverpool to Real Madrid last summer, with his contract at Anfield coming to an end. The Reds did, however, receive a fee of around £10 million, to allow the full-back to move in time for the Club World Cup.
The 27-year-old’s start to life with Real Madrid has not gone as smoothly as he may have hoped. Two separate injuries have reduced his playing time, and he has been in and out of the starting line-up.
He has also received some criticism for his performances when starting games for the club. His defensive contributions are the area that has come under the most scrutiny.
However, he could be handed a boost this summer, with BILD reporting that Real are set to undertake a big overhaul of their squad in the summer transfer window. The changes would see as many as six players leave the club.
One of those is said to be legendary right-back Dani Carvajal. The 34-year-old is the main competition to Alexander-Arnold for a starting spot, with the Spaniard preferred for last weekend’s La Liga clash against Elche.
A potential departure of Carvajal could give Alexander-Arnold the chance to cement himself as the first-choice right-back at the Bernabeu. He will hope a run of consistent starts will help him rediscover the form that he had for Liverpool, and secured him the move in the first place.
The other names on the reported sale list for Real Madrid are defenders David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, left-backs Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia as well as midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.
Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold are back in action on Tuesday night as they travel to take on Man City in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 clash.
The Spanish giants hold a 3-0 advantage from last week’s first leg thanks to Federico Valverde’s first half hat-trick.
Alexander-Arnold started the first leg before being replaced by Carvajal with six minutes of normal time remaining.
