Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
Liverpool have sensationally agreed to allow Mohamed Salah to leave on a free transfer in the summer, despite the forward still having another year remaining on his contract. Salah has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
The decision comes just under 12 months on from the Egyptian putting pen-to-paper on a new two-year deal at Anfield, which ended speculation over his future at the time. However, it seems the agreement is coming to an end one year earlier than initially expected.
It has now emerged that Liverpool will instead allow Salah to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the current season. The club are said to accept the player’s desire to start a new chapter in his career after nine years at Anfield.
The move will see Liverpool free up around £400k-a-week in weekly wages from their books for next season, which could come in useful for the upcoming transfer window. However, Salah leaving as a free agent means the Reds won't get a transfer fee to add to their warchest this summer.
It also sees them part ways with a player who has shown his dissatisfaction earlier in the season.
Salah announced his summer departure in a video posted on social media on Tuesday evening. In an emotional message, the 33-year-old said: "Hello everyone, unfortunately, the day has come.
"This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
"I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, this people would become part of my life.
"Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion it's a history. It's a spirit. I can't explain the words to anyone not part of this club.
"We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life.
"I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates past and present.
"And to the fans: I don't have enough words, the support you showed me through the best time of my career and you stood by me in the toughest times.
"It is something I will never forget and something I will take with me always. Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you.
"This club will always be my home to me and to my family. Thank you for everything, because of all of you I will never walk alone."
Salah’s final game in a Liverpool shirt could come in the Champions League final, which takes place on 30 May. The Reds face reigning champions PSG in the quarter-final next month.
