Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have clashed over Mohamed Salah's Liverpool exit. The Manchester United icon's 'I've got to get out of here' remark regarding Salah appeared to particularly annoy his fellow pundit.
Salah confirmed he will be leaving the club this summer in a statement on social media on Tuesday. The announcement has generated considerable reaction from pundits, with Carragher and Neville offering their views. But when discussing the situation, it appears that there was a dispute between the pair, with Carragher becoming visibly irate.
Salah's departure came after he signed a new two-year contract at Anfield a year ago. That second year has now been cancelled, with the Egyptian free to depart for nothing at the end of the season.
The choice to leave a year sooner than anticipated is the topic of discussion. Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said: "Why are you saying that you're shocked or they've ripped each other's contract? It's a great deal for everybody, it works for everyone."
Neville replied with: "I get that, I'm not saying it's not sweet for everyone that Liverpool can spend the money elsewhere on different players next season, that Mo Salah can change his career.
"I just feel that Mo Salah, I would have thought that him wanting the two-year deal, I would have expected him to say 'no I'm going to hang in there' probably.
"He must think it's gone really badly is what I'm saying. I'm not saying he shouldn't have done it. He must have got to a really low point in his mind to think 'I've got to get out of here', this is a place he loves, by the way."
Growing more agitated, Carragher then responded: "Not get out of here like 'Liverpool I've got to get out of here, it's not the same for me, it's not my team'. Stop talking about Liverpool, it's Liverpool's big problems, it's about Salah."
Neville said: "I'm not saying he's wrong, my point is for him to go from being so desperate to stay at Liverpool, wanting a two-year deal, loving the city and the club like he does, and the fans, to get to a point where by he thinks 'I've got to get out of here and leave this club now. That is a massive shift."
Carragher replied with: "Because he's not playing! Is it the same players? The team built around him. Is he going to play less next season? Of course he is, it's obvious to see, it's not that difficult.
"Mo Salah, it's not just about the money for him, he's like 'I want to play every single week, every single minute'. You can see the way the team is shaping, Liverpool need different players in the wide areas next season, that's what Liverpool need to buy."
Salah's departure will end a nine-year spell at Anfield; during that period, he has featured 435 times, netting 255 goals and contributing a further 122 assists. The 33-year-old will aim to add to those figures between now and the conclusion of the current campaign.
There are seven Premier League fixtures of the season remaining. Liverpool also are also in both FA Cup and Champions League quarter-final action.
Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season and Fanatics has cut the price of this season's kits with 'M. Salah 11' printing.
