Multiple Liverpool journalists were in agreement that a change of the head coach may be required to coax a serious improvement out of the Reds.
That followed a dire 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa – a scoreline that rather flattered Arne Slot’s woeful Reds, who were played off the park in Birmingham.
Two set-piece goals from Virgil van Dijk softened the scoreboard somewhat, but Unai Emery’s men were good value for their three points, which confirmed Champions League football for the hosts.
The time has come for Liverpool to make the difficult but necessary choice: shake hands with Slot, thank him for the memories, and commit to a fresh start for the 2026/27 season.
As David Lynch and Lewis Steele rightly noted on X (formerly Twitter), it’s difficult to imagine the Dutchman leading us out of the ongoing mess we find ourselves in.
Tonight summed up why so few Liverpool fans believe Arne Slot can fix this. Yes, this side is short in attack and signings will help, but they won't sort a midfield and defence that have been shambolic all season. So, without a change of head coach, how does it get better?

The injuries: fair enough the front three was weak. But that back four had three of the best four. The midfield three is the one that won the league. So that won't cut as a good enough excuse for why they leaked so many chances tonight.

Yes, there have been… (sigh)… mitigating factors.
No one denies that the former Feyenoord boss was dealt a poor hand straight from the off this season.
But he was also afforded hundreds of millions of pounds’ worth of investment into a squad that comfortably won the Premier League title last term.
Yes, there have been injuries that have disrupted the progress and, in Alexander Isak’s case, the availability of said firepower.
But what possible excuse can be given for the collapse of a Premier League-winning midfield three in Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai that hasn’t changed?
What of a backline that’s mostly the same, barring the unfortunate injury of Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure?
Right, let’s get one thing straight: bugger the so-called “data”.
Reports coming out of the club indicate that Arne Slot remains the club’s decision-makers’ preference to lead the club next season.
He’s got credit in the bank still (apparently) from last season’s exploits, and there’s sympathy for matters that have simply spiralled out of the manager’s control.
More to the point, the so-called “data” indicates that the 47-year-old remains the best possible fit for Liverpool, ahead of potentially Chelsea-bound Xabi Alonso, at this point.
Because let us tell you something: that 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa was far from shocking. We’ve seen that same turgid display, that remarkable absence of backbone, far too many times this season.
And there’s no chance of this manager fixing it with a couple of wingers in the summer transfer window.
It’s time, Liverpool. It’s time to sack Arne Slot.
He has no “credit in the bank”. He did well with Klopp’s well trained side until February 2025 then he decided to implement his ideas and it’s been downhill ever since. He has nothing left to offer and needs to be moved on.
The longer he stays the worse it will get,the board need to make a change slot needs to go.
I said in the beginning this guy gonna take lfc down towards nothing tactics his formation is no where near of winning anything he won the league no it was still klops team who won it he did nothing at all this guy must go 💯🙏
As an LFC fan,I said several times on this platform that Slot is clueless and is regressing work done over the years.I had been accused of duplication. I still maintain Slot has destroyed LFC, however it seems our assertions fell on deaf ears.Even legends of rivals are mocking us softly, saying he should be afforded more time, while we are being anhilated and decimated .I once said even if we can buy Psg first teamers and Real Madrid first teamers,as long as they are coached by Slot, there can be no fruition.
If FSG can see this comment,I will plead with them to review their decision on allowing Slot to continue next season, because it is crystal clear he has no more plan to.avert the occurrence of this calamity. If Alonso is going to Chelsea,Ndoni who currently coaches Bournemouth can save this LFC sinking ship and has experience in Premier league.
let slot park and go.the defending champions can’t finish in number 5
We have now conceded 77 goals in all competitions this season. If you can’t defend you won’t get anywhere, The basics of the game is at set pieces, if you can’t even do that you’ve got no chance.
77 goals in a season is one of the worst you’ll ever see at Liverpool football club. Weak , physically and mentally weak, under a manager who’s not good enough. FSG have failed at the Pittsburgh penguins, it’s why they recently sold part of the ownership. FSG have failed at the Boston red Sox it’s why they just sacked the entire coaching staff. FSG have failed at Liverpool. Neglect is failure. FSG out.
Sorry but how have they failed at Liverpool? Yes, Slot should be replaced as soon as the season is over – and Hughes perhaps also. At the same time, FSG are the ones who brought in Klopp, our greatest manager since Dalglish 1.0 – or perhaps even since Paisley. 1 Champions League, 2 Premier League titles (after so long in the wilderness) – that’s hardly the definition of failure. FSG should now draw the right conclusions and replace Slot asap.
This guy must go he fails liverpool next season will be worse
Well quite frankly I do not believe that FSG will remain with Slot/if indeed they do then quite frankly they have rocks in their head. Slot has lost the dressing room – why heaven knows but their displays have been ‘insipid’ and that is easy on them about their displays…I will not repeat previous comments about Slit faults….suffice to say for me the only thing to do is appoint Ariola. YNWA.
Someone, from Liverpool’s management, supports Slot! Even though he destroyed the team and continues to bury it, that “someone” continues to support him! Why? What is the purpose? SLOT MUST GO!
If Slot stays then I will not bother wwith next season attending.
Good. We don’t want fair weather fans. More tickets for someone else who will actually support the team
If Slot stays the revenue will fall dramatically. Merchandise will remain unsold world wide. Maybe then FSG will wake from their slumbers and fire this totally failing coach. Do FSG have any management standards and do they do continuous assessment of management? Slot fails on every metric and should not be retained.
Alonso is going to Chelsea. Good luck to him and he has an interesting project with many talented youngsters. For us? We are sticking with arne slot to continue our slump next season. Im not subscribing not buying any Liverpool merchandise for next season.
Worst coaching since Sounness and Hodgson. No plan, No strategy and NO CLUE. Slot out.
