Alexis Mac Allister hit the headlines on Tuesday after some rather candid public comments about his contract situation at Liverpool, and he’s done his talking on the pitch tonight with a jaw-dropping moment against Atletico Madrid.
In the pre-match press conference yesterday, the Argentine said that he was ‘very sad’ not to be offered a new deal at Anfield during the summer and claimed that he had ‘options to leave’ the Reds in recent months.
Andoni Iraola was naturally keen to defuse the situation when he spoke to the media shortly afterwards, and the head coach had no qualms about naming the 27-year-old in his starting XI once again on Wednesday.
Liverpool and Atletico were level at 1-1 when, five minutes into the second half, Mac Allister produced a moment fit for any showreel.
Rio Ngumoha ran at the visitors’ defence and attempted a shot which was blocked down and half-cleared to the feet of the Reds’ number 10, who read the trajectory of the ball and adjusted his body accordingly before lashing a piledriver past the helpless Jan Oblak.

If Mac Allister is keen to earn a contract extension at Anfield, then that is the way to go about it!
The Argentine has a happy habit of coming up with the goods on Champions League nights, having also netted the winner against Real Madrid on Merseyside last season.
His goal was obviously the standout moment, but Liverpool fans will have been equally impressed with his tenacious attitude throughout his 69 minutes on the pitch as he got stuck into a number of challenges, quickly silencing any fears there may have been over his commitment.
He had been on a yellow card for a foul on Lee Kang-in in the 28th minute, and Iraola had the good sense to withdraw our number 10 midway through the second half when he was potentially just one infraction away from being sent off.
The microscope would’ve been on Mac Allister after his explosive comments yesterday, but he showed tonight that he’s determined to prove himself on the pitch as well and seek to force the club’s hands with his performances rather than his words.
