Liverpool defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe will now be eligible to play for the Reds, having gone out on loan in order to obtain a UK work permit.
The 18-year-old was a revelation in pre-season as he seized the opportunity handed to him by Andoni Iraola, who was severely short on senior centre-backs due to injury and, in Virgil van Dijk’s case, a belated return from his post-World Cup break.
However, the Austrian didn’t meet the criteria for a UK work permit as he hadn’t yet accrued the requisite game-time in competitive fixtures, and he was subsequently loaned out to Levante for the 2026/27 campaign.
Ndukwe came off the bench to make his debut for Los Azulgranas in their 4-2 defeat to Barcelona in LaLiga over the weekend, and as Ian Doyle explained for the Liverpool Echo, that 19-minute appearance was significant.
By coming on in that fixture, the teenager has now reached the requisite threshold to secure a UK work permit, and Liverpool have the option to recall him from his loan in January if they wish to do so.
The Reds will also have an exemption spot available from February onwards which’d enable the Austrian to play for Iraola’s side at that point.

Ndukwe was widely praised for his performances during pre-season, with James Pearce lauding a ‘composed and commanding’ display from the 18-year-old in Liverpool’s draw against Monaco last month.
With Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni having been out injured and the Austrian youngster ineligible to feature before his loan to Levante, it left Iraola with just two senior centre-backs for our first five matches of the campaign in Van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet.
Los Azulgranas were 3-0 down to Barcelona when Ndukwe was introduced in the 71st minute and actually outscored their opponents by 2-1 thereafter, an indication of how they improved after he came on for Adri.
The teenager will hopefully get plenty more game-time for Luis Castro’s side over the next few months and, once January rolls around, Liverpool can then decide whether to recall him to Anfield or allow him to continue his development at the Estadi Ciutat de Valencia.
By then it might be the case that the Reds very much need him, even as backup to our starting central defenders. What he showed in pre-season would suggest that he’d be capable of answering the call from his parent club, if it were to come.
