One midfielder has announced his exit from Liverpool on Monday in a heartfelt social media post thanking everyone who’s helped him throughout his time with the Reds.
Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate and Mo Salah all left Anfield on high-profile free transfers over the summer, and another player whose contract expired since the end of last season is James Balagizi.
The midfielder progressed through the various age grades in LFC’s academy but never made an official first-team appearance, with the closest he came being two matches as an unused substitute in the 2021/22 season (Transfermarkt).
Now 22, Balagizi took to Instagram on Monday to announce that his time with Liverpool has come to an end, confirming the personal news with a poignant message of gratitude.
He posted: ‘From 11 to 22, it’s been an honour to represent this special club throughout a large part of my life. I’m so grateful and fortunate for all of the experiences I’ve had over the years. A massive thank you to everyone who has been on this journey alongside me – teammates, coaches and staff.
‘This is a period I’ll always look back on fondly, with many ups, downs and lessons learned. Hopefully, I can use all of these experiences to help shape the rest of my professional career. I’d also like to thank everyone who has supported me in any capacity. YNWA ❤️’

While several players at Liverpool have made the leap from academy to first team in recent years (Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley, Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni), that biggest of steps unfortunately eluded Balagizi.
The midfielder had loan spells at Crawley, Wigan, Kilmarnock and most recently Forest Green, but three of those were cut short mid-season, with the 22-year-old unable to gain the stability that he needed for his career to properly take off.
Kevin Betsy, who managed him at the first of those clubs, hailed the ‘fantastic’ potential of the youngster when he worked with him at Broadfield Stadium (Liverpool Echo), although injury problems tended to strike at inopportune moments for the player.
It remains to be seen where Balagizi will end up next – could an EFL club seek to bring him in as a free agent; or might he even try his luck in mainland Europe, a route which has become increasingly popular for English players in recent years?
Although a first-team debut eluded him, the midfielder can feel proud of his journey at Liverpool, and to even come close to playing senior football for the Reds is a mark of the talent that he possesses. We wish him the very best with the remainder of his career.
